110: 12.1 Unfamiliar surroundings

Today I am in a different environment. Because of the total unreliability of Greater Anglia trains (bane of my life), there aren’t any running my usual route to work this weekend. And because I am license-less and car-less, the only option was to book the accommodation near the hospital for the entirety of my on-call shifts. After checking in to my room, I really can’t complain. The room is spacious, there is an ensuite bathroom and the shared kitchen-living room is clean. However, it lacks free wifi. They are charging me 2.50 a day for wifi here, and I am limited to using only one device at a time. As I have it on my phone, I am typing this entry on a Word Doc on my computer. Isn’t this 2018?

Despite the convenience (I can wake up literally quarter to 9 and still make it in early for work), this room feels very foreign, sterile and lacking in personality. The room has its bare essentials - the all important desk, chair, wardrobe and bed combo, but it isn’t homey. This is not where I want to be after a long 12 hour shift at work. I guess what I am trying to say is - nowhere feels like home except home. If the commute wasn’t 90 minutes, but maybe closer to an hour, I would think that I would still opt to make the long arduous journey home. Because there, I can wind down with a cup of tea using my mug. I can shower in my bathroom, and lie asleep in my bed. Those are amongst the true comforts in life.

Side note: I didn’t bring anything in terms of food for my 3-night sleepover. Took me a good hour to figure out what and how to order on the JustEat app. This is usually A’s area of expertise. Even after that one hour, I typed in the wrong phone number and wrong address (noob). Thankfully, the delivery man found sense in my haphazard order and successfully united me with my food. Not realising it was buy 1 get 1 free day, I had glutinously ordered 2 pizzas, 1 order of chicken wings and 1 order of potato wedges. In today’s version of dinner, I only managed to heroically consume at most a quarter of the lot. It looks like my nights will be sustained with fast food leftovers.
